Homelessness

I love writing about homelessness.  It is one of urban America’s worst plagues that need tons of attention and money in order to solve it.  It is unimaginable to have homelessness in a country as rich as ours.  Yet, homelessness persists.

Homelessness has remained significantly high and affects different demographics disproportionately. The ultimate solution to homelessness is housing.  However, the response and approach is quite different depending on the reason for homelessness.

Here are some interesting facts about homelessness that was compiled by the National Alliance to End Homelessness.

  •  750,000 men, women, and children are homeless in the US on any given night.
  • 2.5 to 3.5 million people will live on the streets or emergency shelter
  • 25% of foster care children experienced homelessness upon two years of exiting the foster care system
  • 600,000 families and 1.35 million children experience homelessness and about 50% of the total homeless population is part of a family
  • Between 23% – 40% of homeless adults are veterans
  • The rate of homeless HIV infection is 3 times higher than the general population
  • 43% of children living with homeless parents are under the age of 6.
