Poverty

Poverty is a devastating social ill.  I remember reading the Grapes of Wrath, Cannery Row, and Native Son in high school and college.  These books made me think about poverty from every perspective, particularly race and class.  From that point, I wanted to make poverty one of my personal missions.

It is not a secret that those living in poverty are at a disadvantage than those who are not.  People living in poverty earn less and pay more for basic everyday living.  They are the first to be preyed upon by payday loans, rent-a–centers, and other subprime products meant to take their money and continue the cycle of poverty.

Poverty does not have to be a norm for communities.  I learned that in college at UCLA after being forced to read very complex and deep intellectual authors, Bell Hooks and Jay MacLeod.  Impoverished communities and people can transform with assistance, financial literacy, ingenuity, and political will.
